About the Department
Melis Behlil, Phd. Chairperson“Seeing is believing,” as the saying goes. What do we believe—or see—when we go to the movies, enjoying the latest releases from around the world, when we sit in front of our TV, watching reality show and evening news, or for that matter when we listen to our favorite radio station, broadcasting live from a concert hall or sports arena? What do we want our audiences see—and believe—when they watch or listen to a television or radio program, or film we produce? At the Department of Radio, Television, and Cinema, we approach teaching theory, method, and skills necessary for producing programs for media with these questions in mind. We ask our students to remember the tensions between seeing and believing at every step of their education. Seeing is an art, believing is consequential.
We offer an innovative and comprehensive curriculum, emphasizing both skill learning and conceptual development. In small-sized classes, our students discuss contemporary theories of art, film, and communication, experiment with latest technologies, and learn the arts of producing programs for radio and television and making movies. In workshops, they meet the leading figures of the media, ranging from camera technicians to directors, media critics to program distributors, and critically engage the media producers and commentators. Most importantly, on the way to becoming media professionals, they learn to question the media products that color our everyday, as well as their own productions.
We genuinely value developing close ties with the media industry in Turkey. To this end, we have signed cooperation agreements with two major television and film companies: Pusula Academy and Plato Film. Founded in 2004 by acclaimed Turkish broadcast journalist Mithat Bereket and his team, Pusula Academy operates from our campus and trains our students through year-around in-house internships. Plato Film, founded by prominent producer/director Sinan Çetin, is one of Turkey’s leading film and television production studios. At Plato Film, our students are placed as interns in film, commercial and television productions. They also attend industry level workshops in editing, camera operating and directing. At Plato Film School, a newly-created division of Plato Film, they have the opportunity to complement their course work in cinema and television production, set and sound design, acting, and advanced screenplay writing.
